Cost-Per-Use: The Only Shopping Math That Actually Matters

July 1, 2026 · BirdXDeal Editorial

A $150 pair of boots you wear twice a week for three years costs about 48 cents per wear. A $25 gadget that gets used once costs $25 per use. Once you start dividing price by realistic number of uses, a lot of 'good deals' stop looking so good — and a lot of 'expensive' purchases start looking smart.

A rough framework:

  • Estimate honestly how many times you'll actually use it — not how many times you imagine using it.
  • Divide price by that number.
  • Compare that number, not the sticker price, against alternatives.

This is especially useful for anything marketed on convenience or novelty — kitchen gadgets, fitness equipment, and single-purpose electronics are the categories where cost-per-use most often reveals the sticker price was misleading.
